The Registrar of Political Parties has formally initiated the name change of The Equitable Party (TEP) to Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM).
The move marks a significant step towards formalising the proposed new identity, following a resolution by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on October 8, 2026.
In a letter dated October 13, Registrar of Political Parties J. C. Lorionokou, as seen by Kenyans.co.ke, confirmed receipt of documents submitted by the TEP’s Secretary General, Emmanuel Soreh in support of the proposed change.
"This Office is in receipt of your letter dated 8th October 2026 forwarding the following documents; Resolution of the National Executive Committee (NEC) held on 8th October 2026 resolving to change the party name from The Equitable Party (TEP) to Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM)," stated the notice in part.
The party advertised the proposed name change in the Daily Nation newspaper on October 10, and also published the notice on its official website.
Following its review, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) confirmed it had initiated the gazettement process under Section 20(1)(d) of the Political Parties Act, which applies when a party wants to change its symbol, party colors, slogan, and name.
The development gives the proposed rebranding a formal step forward, although the party must still comply with the legal requirements governing changes to political party names.
Under the process outlined by the ORPP, the party must allow 14 days from the newspaper publication date before reporting any public representations concerning the proposed change.
The Registrar also directed the party to inform the office whether members of the public had raised objections and explain how any representations had been addressed.
