As part of its investigation, JPJ has instructed Chery Malaysia to identify potentially affected vehicles using component numbers.
CHERY MALAYSIA has announced a recall campaign for affected Omoda 5 vehicles following the latest rear axle incident in Johor Bahru, hours after the Road Transport Department (JPJ) temporarily suspended the model’s Vehicle Type Approval and halted new registrations pending a technical investigation.
The recall covers affected Omoda 5 C and H variants, with Chery asking owners to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through its website.
Vehicles identified under the campaign will undergo an inspection, with the relevant component replaced where necessary at no cost to the owner.
Chery is also encouraging Omoda 5 owners who want additional reassurance to visit an authorised service centre for an inspection.
For existing owners, it is important to distinguish the recall from JPJ’s VTA suspension. A Vehicle Type Approval is required before a new vehicle can be registered, so the suspension primarily prevents new registrations of the affected model and variants while the investigation is ongoing.
JPJ has not announced a blanket stop-use order for Omoda 5 vehicles that are already registered and on the road.
Existing Omoda 5 C and H owners should, however, check whether their VIN is included in Chery’s latest recall campaign.
Chery has yet to disclose how many vehicles are involved this time, which production batches are ffected, or the exact component fault behind the latest incident.
JPJ’s action follows an incident in Johor Bahru on October 6 in which an Omoda 5 was seen with its rear suspension and axle assembly, together with both rear wheels, separated from the vehicle.
The incident occurred along Jalan Pandan near AEON Mall Tebrau City, with no injuries reported. The cause has not yet been established.
As part of its investigation, JPJ has instructed Chery Malaysia to identify potentially affected vehicles using component numbers, production batches, VINs, and other technical information.
The department will also audit the Omoda 5 production and assembly process as well as the relevant axle component supplier, covering areas including quality control, weld joint inspection procedures, and component safety.
The VTA suspension will remain until the necessary corrective and preventive measures have been completed and verified by JPJ.
The latest incident inevitably brings back memories of a similar Omoda 5 rear axle failure in 2024, which eventually led to 600 vehicles being called in for inspection.
Chery’s investigation at the time traced the issue to a component supplier, where a worn welding tip had been replaced during a facility upgrade but the equipment was subsequently incorrectly calibrated.
Chery later identified 60 Malaysian Omoda 5 units fitted with potentially affected rear axle components produced on August 15 2023.
As an additional precaution, it widened the campaign to 600 vehicles fitted with rear axles manufactured between 14 and 17 August 2023. Affected vehicles received inspections and, where required, replacement of the rear axle.
Despite the visual similarities between the two incidents, there is currently no confirmation that the latest failure was caused by the same welding issue identified in 2024.
It has also not been established publicly whether the vehicle involved in the October 2026 incident fell within the previous recall batch, had already undergone an inspection, or used a rear axle produced outside the earlier affected period.
The recall also concerns the original petrol-powered Omoda 5, specifically the C and H variants that were sold in Malaysia with a torsion-beam rear suspension.
The model has since been replaced by the Chery O5, which was launched locally in September 2025 with a multi-link independent rear suspension in place of the previous torsion-beam setup. The current O5 is not named in Chery Malaysia’s latest recall statement.
Chery Malaysia says all inspections and necessary component replacements under the new campaign will be carried out free of charge.
Owners can check their VIN through the Chery Malaysia website or contact the Chery Careline at 03-9388 0888 for further information.
