In plain English
Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday on November 1 and 2 when families remember relatives who have died, with flowers, food and altars called ofrendas. Mexico City now stages large public events around it, which matters for anyone planning a trip.
The Parade and the Zócalo
The 10th Gran Desfile de Día de Muertos starts at the Diana Cazadora roundabout on Paseo de la Reforma and ends at the Zócalo, the capital’s main square. Organisers expect more than 4,000 participants and 12 allegorical floats, with music by Instituto Mexicano del Sonido.
The parade is dedicated to four Mexican cultural figures: writers Nellie Campobello and Juan Rulfo, singer Juan Gabriel and filmmaker Emilio “El Indio” Fernández. The Zócalo offering will feature a 32-metre Catrina, with organisers seeking a Guinness World Records mark.
The display also includes 100,000 cempasúchil plants and artist-decorated axolotl sculptures. The Catrina, a skeleton lady in elegant dress, is Day of the Dead’s best-known icon.
Flowers, Money and Visitors
Mexico City officials report 10 million cempasúchil plants grown, up 53.8% from 6.5 million in 2025. Cempasúchil is the orange marigold used to decorate altars and graves.
The business chamber Concanaco Servytur estimates Day of the Dead activity will generate 53 billion pesos (about US$2.8 billion) from October 25 to November 2, up 7% on 2025. That covers flowers, bread, candles, food, hotels, transport and travel, converted at 18.68 pesos per US dollar (EODHD, October 22).
The city’s Tourism Secretariat expects more than 500,000 visitors during the season. In León, Guanajuato, authorities have launched a security operation for cemetery events, supported by the city’s C4 video-surveillance network.
What It Means for US Readers
US visitors will find more than 5,000 free events, so much of the programme costs nothing beyond travel and lodging. The chamber’s forecast includes hotels and restaurants, so booking early is sensible.
The parade starts at 4:00 p.m. ET on October 31, because US clocks only go back on November 1 and Mexico no longer uses daylight saving. After that, the gap shrinks to one hour.
What Is Not Known
Reports describe the 32-metre Catrina as a planned Guinness attempt, and no record has been confirmed. The category, measurement rules and verification date have not been published.
Final attendance, spending and safety figures will exist only after the events. No complete security headcount for the parade and the Zócalo has been published.
