The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has called for an end to child marriage and increased investment in girls’ education, rights and protection as it commemorated the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child.
The event, organised by the Special Adviser on Women Affairs to the AMAC Chairman, Loveth Izekor, on Friday, brought girls together to promote leadership, civic participation, and their involvement in decision-making.
Themed “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights,” the commemoration highlighted the need for stronger protection against harmful practices and greater opportunities for girls to access quality education and develop their potential.
A major highlight of the event was a mock parliamentary session in which the girls simulated legislative proceedings, including debates, deliberations, and decision-making.
Speaking at the event, Izekor said child marriage remained a major concern because of its implications for girls’ education, health, personal development, and future opportunities.
She called on families, communities, government’s institutions, and the media to sustain efforts to protect girls’ rights and ensure their safety and well-being.
Stakeholders at the event also stressed the importance of sustained advocacy, community engagement and access to quality education in addressing practices that limit girls’ opportunities.
The organisers said empowering girls required more than protecting them from abuse and early marriage, noting that they also needed the knowledge, skills and opportunities to make informed decisions and shape their futures.
