The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has updated the reservation policies for admissions to Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Mumbai, introducing separate reservation provisions for transgender candidates and orphans in both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes.
Under the revised reservation policy, each participating institute will reserve 1% of its total sanctioned student intake for transgender candidates and another 1% for orphan candidates. MNLU Mumbai has accordingly modified its seat reservation criteria for both UG and PG admissions. Candidates who are eligible under the newly introduced categories should check the updated admission guidelines and revise their reservation details, wherever applicable, by October 31. Previously, the Consortium also announced changes to the reservation categories at the National Law University Meghalaya and the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata.
According to the revised MNLU Mumbai information brochure, the university will admit 100 students to its Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (BA LLB) Honours programme and 50 students to its Master of Laws (LLM) programme through CLAT 2027. The final intake and seat allocation will be subject to the reservation provisions applicable in Maharashtra, as approved by the university's Executive Council.
MNLU Mumbai Reservation Criteria for CLAT 2027
Admission to MNLU Mumbai will be granted to candidates who satisfy the prescribed eligibility conditions and provide all the necessary supporting documents. The university has retained the right to revoke an admission if a candidate fails to meet the eligibility requirements or is found to have submitted fraudulent or incorrect documents.
Under the revised reservation framework, 30% of the seats will be reserved for women across all categories. Additionally, 5% of the seats will be earmarked for Specially Abled Persons (SAP). Candidates seeking admission under the SAP category must produce a valid disability certificate issued by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
A separate 5% reservation will apply to wards of ex-servicemen and defence personnel. Applicants claiming this benefit must submit the relevant certificate issued by the appropriate authority, unit, department, headquarters, records office or recognised welfare office associated with the Army, Navy or Air Force. The required documentation includes an Education Concession Certificate specifying the candidate's priority category and a dependent card.
However, the reservation benefit for wards of ex-servicemen and defence personnel will not extend to children of civilian employees who are currently working or have previously worked in the Indian Defence Services. Candidates seeking admission under this category should therefore verify their eligibility and ensure that they possess the prescribed documents.
In addition to these provisions, the revised policy mandates a reservation of 1% of the total sanctioned intake for transgender candidates and another 1% for orphans at each institute.
With the revised reservation policies at MNLU Mumbai, NLU Meghalaya and WBNUJS Kolkata, CLAT 2027 applicants are advised to examine the latest information brochures carefully.
The deadline to register for CLAT 2027 is also October 31. The national-level law entrance examination is scheduled to take place on December 6, 2026, from 2 PM to 4 PM.
