When Abongile Tom blew his final whistle, Miguel Cardoso walked behind his dugout, pointed to the crowd with his left hand, and firmly placed his right hand over his heart.
Granted, the Portuguese coach used the moment to imitate Jayden Adams' signature celebration, paying homage to the late star, but he also defined what the day was truly about: Masandawana.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ supporters had entered the sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium feeling vulnerable. Their team hadn’t lifted this particular trophy in five years, nor any domestic cup in the last four. In contrast, their opponents – the Ghost – arrived brimming with confidence as Orlando Pirates were record-extending, four-time successive winners of the competition with seven trophies over the last four seasons.
Yet thanks to the sheer depth and quality of this Sundowns squad, Masandawana emerged victorious under the Durban night sky, setting a formidable tone for their high domestic aspirations following a barren domestic cup run last season.
Mastering the art of winning finals, Sundowns claimed the MTN8 in their very first match returning from the Fifa break – having already lifted the Fifa African-Asian-Pacific Cup just before the international hiatus.
Winning back-to-back silverware with no fixtures in between was the exact statement Sundowns needed, capping off a remarkable stretch that also saw them end a decade-long continental drought in their previous season’s finale.
Across all three final triumphs, the real Sundowns showed up. Under the dark skies of Durban, Teboho Mokoena demonstrated why the club had agonised over his potential injury absence. He not only broke the deadlock but also dictated the tempo and maintained the team's defensive shape in the second half as Pirates pressed desperately for an equaliser.
What made the performance all the more remarkable was Mokoena playing through severe personal grief, having recently lost his grandfather while his brother remained hospitalised recovering from a stabbing. His dedication of the triumph carried undeniable emotional weight.
Mokoena did not stand alone. His teammates carried him through the tough moments and rallied when he shone. When he conceded a late penalty, Ronwen Williams came to the rescue, diving to deny Gamphani Lungu's spot-kick and preserve the lead.
It was precisely the resilience Cardoso had demanded. That crucial save – along with several key interventions against the run of play – reminded everyone why Williams remains one of the best goalkeepers on the continent, securing his first and most vital clean sheet of the tournament after a shaky defensive start to the campaign.
Sundowns could have put the game out of reach earlier had Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine not kept the scoreline respectable with first-half saves. While Sundowns' strikers, including Iqraam Rayners, missed several chances from open play, they ultimately created their own luck. Tom awarded Sundowns a controversial second-half penalty, which Rayners coolly converted to seal the result.
While Sundowns have earned praise across the continent and beyond, they are now ensuring their supporters hold ultimate bragging rights at home by conquering the season's most lucrative domestic cup. Masandawana will hope this momentum carries over as they set their sights on reclaiming the league title – once again from Pirates.
