Thirty Ghanaian journalists have received training in emerging technologies under the UK Media Excellence for Emerging Technologies Fellowship, an initiative by Imperial Global and the British High Commission in Ghana to strengthen science journalism.
The programme, now in its fourth year, forms part of the UK-Ghana Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) Strategy, which seeks to deepen cooperation between the two countries and improve public understanding of scientific developments.
The training equipped participants with practical skills and knowledge in artificial intelligence (AI), climate change, digital tools and other emerging technologies.
It also provided opportunities for journalists to engage directly with researchers and scientists from across Ghana to better understand scientific research and its implications for society.
British High Commissioner to Ghana, Dr Christian Rogg, said the fellowship demonstrated how journalism could connect scientific research with public understanding, policy discussions and potential solutions to societal challenges.
“I think what it shows is that the things you’ve been working on and that we’ve been working on together, they aren’t just the output from a training exercise, but they show how journalism can connect research with public understanding and with policy discussion and also with potential solutions to the problems investigated,” he said.
Journalists engage scientists and researchers
As part of the programme, fellows visited the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Environment 360 to observe practical applications of science, technology, innovation and the circular economy.
The visits were intended to help participants connect scientific concepts with real-world developments and strengthen their ability to report accurately on complex technical issues.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2026 fellowship, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, called for stronger collaboration between scientists, researchers and journalists to improve public understanding of science and technology in Ghana.
The fellowship seeks to help journalists translate scientific and technological developments into accessible, engaging and evidence-based stories, particularly as issues such as AI, climate change and digital transformation increasingly influence public policy and everyday life.
Ten shortlisted journalists and media professionals are expected to participate in an exchange programme at Imperial College London, funded by the British High Commission in Ghana.
The exchange is expected to expose the participants to international research, scientific communication and emerging technologies, while providing opportunities to build professional networks and gain perspectives that could inform science and technology reporting in Ghana.
The shortlisted participants are:
- Nana Boakye Dankwah Yiadom — Multimedia Group
- Ibrahim Abode — Metro TV
- Nabil Ahmed Rufai — Freelancer
- Esther Agyapong — Content Creator
- Jacqueline Yeboah — Multimedia Group
- Anthony Adongo Apubeo — Ghana News Agency
- Esther Nkrumah — Multimedia Group
- Evelyn Obeng Akese — Graphic Communications Group
- Ibrahim Khalilulahi Usman — Eco Media Africa
- Portia Cudjoe — Media General
The London exchange is a key component of the fellowship, offering selected participants an opportunity to deepen their understanding of science journalism and the communication of technological advances.
The initiative forms part of wider efforts to strengthen ties between Ghana’s media and scientific communities, with the aim of supporting public awareness, accountability and evidence-based decision-making.
Journalists in Nigeria are also benefiting from the initiative through a programme in Abuja.
