The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has referred allegations of sexual misconduct involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, and female students to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for investigation.
The move is intended to allow the police to investigate the criminal aspects of the allegations while education authorities conduct separate administrative inquiries.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, Mr Iddrisu confirmed that the headmaster had been interdicted pending investigations, stressing that the government would not tolerate sexual misconduct in schools.
“Any act of sexual misconduct involving a teacher and a student amounts to abuse of office, and government takes strong exception to it. We have forwarded it to the criminal investigation department to deal with the criminal aspects of it whilst I’ve asked for the suspension of the headmaster without prejudice whilst we look into the merits of the case,” he said on Monday, October 19.
Mr Iddrisu also disclosed that the government was considering broader measures to address indiscipline in schools, including the introduction of stronger regulations to guide the conduct of students and teachers.
He said a committee would soon be established to advise the government on the matter.
The Minister further indicated his support for making the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) code of conduct and standards legally binding under Article 11 of the 1992 Constitution.
The GES announced Mr Abdulai’s interdiction in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, to facilitate investigations into the allegations.
The case reportedly triggered a student rampage at the school, during which some school property was destroyed, forcing the temporary closure of the institution.
The allegations remain subject to investigation.
