A London man has died after falling three-storeys from a stairwell in northeast Spain, according to local media reports.
Lee Jowitt, 41, fell from a height while walking up the stairs at the hostel he was staying at shortly after midnight on Sunday, October 11.
It is understood that Mr Jowitt was staying at the Carrer Unió in the Catalonian city of Tarragona with a friend when the tragedy occurred.
Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's police force, has launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding Mr Jowitt’s death.
But the fall is believed to be accidental.
Paying tribute to her brother on Facebook, Mr Jowitt’s sister wrote: “This is going to be the hardest post I’m probably ever going to do but my darling brother Lee has sadly passed away in Spain from a fall on Saturday.
“I don’t know how I will ever process this. He was only 41. Why is this world so cruel? I'm so done.
“Rest in peace, you were one of a kind, truly special.
“I love you so so much and our special memories will live with me forever.”
Hostel staff immediately contacted emergency services following the incident, and a doctor who was also a guest at the hostel was among the first to try and help Mr Jowitt.
Paramedics attempted resuscitation, but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
A fundraiser has been launched to help bring Mr Jowitt’s body back to the UK so that his family can “give him the send-off he deserves.”
The fundraiser's organiser, Richard Spiteri, described Mr Jowitt as a "much-loved friend, colleague and brother", adding that his death had left many people "heartbroken".
The appeal had raised more than £8,300 at the time of publication.
