President Donald Trump has fired U.S. ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, who was exposed for demanding money from a political donor.
Newly appointed White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said at a press briefing on Tuesday that Ms Guilfoyle has been asked to resign.
“She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Ms Zacharia said at the briefing.
On Monday, Mr Trump said he was considering firing Ms Guilfoyle amid allegations that she demanded $100,000 from a political donor in exchange for access to anything in Trump’s government.
Ms Guilfoyle has come under fire since reports of her requesting money from a political donor, promising favours from Mr Trump’s administration in return.
Eric Deters, a Trump donor, exposed Ms Guilfoyle asking him to pay her outstanding $100,000 American Express bill before her 2025 confirmation hearing in the Senate.
“She was so desperate for that $100,000. It was a quid pro quo,” Mr Deters said in an interview with NBC News last week. “She said I could ask her for anything and everything in the Trump world. There was no request too big.”
