KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyer Kamal Hisham Jaafar, who represents the two policemen in the assault case involving Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, said there was no need for others to bring up his past.
"My role is on a professional basis and not on a personal basis," he said in a statement.
Regarding questions about his past, Kamal, a former legal counsel for the Johor royal family, said he was grateful to the Sultan, who had granted him an unconditional pardon.
"So, the matter should not be touched on or questioned by any party to preserve the dignity and grandeur of His Majesty, and it is also considered settled," he said.
Claims about Kamal relate to legal battles linked to his stint as a legal counsel, which have circulated on social media.
He said he was now carrying out his duties as a defence lawyer and solicitor as usual.
"I have never been convicted of any criminal offence, as falsely alleged on social media.
"If there were any criminal conviction, the Malaysian Bar would certainly not have issued my practising certificate," he said.
Kamal said he was handling the case pro bono, as he had done with many others.
He added that his legal team was collecting evidence of condemnation, insults, slander and criticism that crossed the line of the law, with a view to taking appropriate action.
On Wednesday, Shuhaily, who is the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) director-general, pleaded not guilty to two charges of voluntarily causing hurt to two Special Branch policemen last month.
Kamal represents the two policemen, Lance Corporals Muhammad Ekmal Sofwan Driman, 25, and Mohamad Faiz Saman, 40.
