Troy Aikman is leaving the door open to his next broadcasting job, and the uncertainty surrounding his ESPN contract is putting one of NFL television’s longest-running partnerships on increasingly shaky ground.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer, who has called NFL games alongside Joe Buck for 25 years, said Thursday that he expects to finish the current season before becoming a free agent, comments that offered the clearest indication yet that his future at ESPN is far from settled.
“There’s probably a time and a place for all that to be discussed. I don’t know if now is the time,” Aikman said during an appearance on Dallas sports radio station 96.7 The Ticket, addressing reports of tension between the longtime broadcast partners. “I’ll broadcast through this season and I’ll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens.”
He also alluded to the possibility of finding a new home, adding that he was looking forward to the Super Bowl and “where my next landing spot may be.”
The comments follow reports that Aikman and Buck had an argument before ESPN’s Oct. 12 broadcast of the Buffalo Bills-Los Angeles Rams game at SoFi Stadium. According to Front Office Sports, the disagreement came amid uncertainty over Aikman’s contract negotiations, after Buck secured a lucrative new deal with ESPN while Aikman remained without a formal offer.
ESPN has not publicly announced a new agreement with Aikman. His current deal, reportedly worth $18 million annually over five years, expires after the season’s Super Bowl broadcast.
Buck, meanwhile, has reportedly agreed to a six-year extension worth between $100 million and $108 million, depending on the published account, keeping him at ESPN well beyond the end of Aikman’s current contract.
The disparity has become a significant source of speculation around the Monday Night Football booth. Aikman and Buck have worked together since 2002, first at Fox Sports and, since 2022, at ESPN. Their move to the Disney-owned network was designed to bring stability and star power to Monday night’s flagship NFL broadcast after years of changes in the booth.
For now, there is no indication that the two will stop working together before the end of the season. They remain scheduled to call ESPN’s historic first Super Bowl telecast, with Super Bowl LXI set for Feb. 14, 2027. But the prospect of the network’s biggest NFL broadcast arriving just as its lead analyst becomes a free agent adds an awkward subplot to what should be a milestone moment for ESPN.
A partnership built over decades faces a new test
On-air, Buck and Aikman have developed the kind of shorthand that is difficult to manufacture. Buck’s play-by-play and Aikman’s analysis have complemented each other through hundreds of games, including multiple Super Bowls at Fox. They know when to leave a moment alone, when to push a point and when the other is about to jump in. That ease is a big part of what makes their potential separation meaningful beyond the usual contract-season noise.
Buck has spoken warmly about their relationship in recent weeks. In a September appearance on Front Office Sports Tonight, he described the shared experiences that have brought them together, including raising daughters and spending much of their professional lives around the NFL.
“He knows where I’m going to go before I go there. Vice versa,” Buck said. “He knows I’m his biggest fan.”
Those comments now sit alongside a more complicated reality. Reports indicate that Buck attempted to break the ice with Aikman before the Bills-Rams broadcast, only for the conversation to turn into an argument. Neither man has provided a detailed public account of the exchange, and Aikman has not explicitly said that his relationship with Buck is beyond repair.
Still, the contract situation is hard to ignore. Buck has a new long-term commitment, while Aikman is approaching the end of his deal without the same public signal from ESPN that it wants to keep him. It is the kind of thing that can change the temperature of a working relationship, even one that has survived a quarter-century of travel, pressure and live television.
Aikman’s remarks also suggest that he is not prepared to wait indefinitely for the network to make its intentions clear. He has said he plans to complete the season, but his reference to a future landing spot naturally invites questions about where he could go next.
Where could Aikman land?
CBS Sports is an obvious name to watch if Aikman becomes available, particularly amid changes to the network’s NFL analyst lineup. Amazon Prime Video and Netflix could also be considered potential destinations as streaming services continue to invest in premium sports programming and high-profile on-air talent.
Those are possibilities, not confirmed negotiations. No new employer has been announced, and there is no public evidence that Aikman has reached an agreement elsewhere.
Aikman would bring considerable value to any NFL broadcaster. A three-time Super Bowl champion and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, he has spent decades working at the highest level of football television. His reputation for direct analysis and his familiarity with the league make him a compelling candidate for networks looking to strengthen their lead game coverage.
His value to ESPN also extends beyond the booth. Aikman’s arrival in 2022 helped the network establish a more consistent identity for Monday Night Football and strengthened its relationship with the NFL. ESPN has since secured a larger role in the league’s media landscape, culminating in its upcoming Super Bowl debut.
Replacing him would not be a simple matter of finding another former player who can explain defensive coverage. The network would need someone who can handle the pace of a national broadcast, work naturally with Buck and bring enough credibility to a package that has become one of ESPN’s most important sports properties.
Greg Olsen, the former Fox Sports lead analyst who was moved down the network’s pecking order after Tom Brady joined, has emerged in media speculation as one possible candidate for a bigger role elsewhere. Other names have been floated, but ESPN has not announced a succession plan.
And there is a second consideration: Buck’s future. He has made clear that his interests extend beyond calling football, with appearances across Disney-owned platforms and other entertainment projects. His recent work has included hosting ESPN’s “Jeopardy!” and guest judging on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” Those ventures underscore his versatility, but they do not necessarily mean he wants a different NFL partner.
Aikman, by contrast, has generally maintained a more football-centered public profile. The difference in their approaches to the broader entertainment business may be part of what makes their partnership so effective, but it could also complicate how each sees the next phase of his career.
ESPN still has time to make a deal
A split is not inevitable. ESPN could still make Aikman a formal offer, and the two sides have months to work out an agreement before his current contract expires. The fact that Buck has signed a long-term extension does not, by itself, mean the network has decided to move on from Aikman.
But the optics are difficult to miss. ESPN has locked in one half of its most recognizable NFL booth while leaving the other half’s future unresolved. Aikman’s public comments have turned what might otherwise have been routine contract uncertainty into a story that will follow the pair through the remainder of the season.
The Super Bowl will provide a natural deadline of sorts. It is a major event for ESPN, a career milestone for the broadcast team and potentially the final game Aikman calls for the network. If he does leave, the separation would mark the end of a partnership that began at Fox more than two decades ago and continued when both men moved to ESPN in 2022.
That earlier move nearly ended their pairing before it began. Aikman joined ESPN first, and Buck was able to leave Fox before completing the final year of his contract, allowing the two to reunite on Monday Night Football. Their continued partnership has since become one of the more stable arrangements in NFL broadcasting.
Now, after years of working side by side, they face a different kind of uncertainty. Aikman has not declared that he is leaving, and Buck has not publicly suggested that he wants a new partner. But until ESPN resolves the contract question, the possibility of a breakup will remain part of the season’s story.
For a network preparing to stage its first Super Bowl, that is a distractionit would probably rather not have. For Aikman, it may also be an opportunity to test the market and decide whether ESPN remains the right place for the next chapter of his broadcasting career.
The coming months should tell us a great deal. For now, the duo is still in the booth, the Super Bowl is on the schedule, and Aikman is making no secret that he is thinking about what comes next.
