Kohima, Oct 13: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has renewed its demand for the termination of 109 alleged irregular appointments across 16 Nagaland government departments, saying a Cabinet Sub-Committee has assured it that employees recruited outside the prescribed selection process would face action.
NSF leaders said the federation would examine the government’s response and continue to press for accountability, transparency and merit-based recruitment.
According to the NSF, the 109 appointments include 13 posts under the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) filled between 2018 and 2021, and 96 posts under the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) category filled between 2019 and 2023. The federation alleged that the appointments violated government orders and established recruitment procedures.
The NSF said the Cabinet Sub-Committee had informed it that two employees in the non-NPSC category and three in the NPSC category had been terminated. Two employees in the non-NPSC category and one in the NPSC category had also resigned, it said.
However, eight employees allegedly appointed to NPSC-category posts outside the Commission’s purview were still in service, according to the federation. The NSF said the committee had assured it that their services would be terminated.
The federation also demanded action against 22 employees appointed to NSSB-category posts after the Board was constituted. Another 47 appointments made after the NSF submitted a representation in August 2019 seeking a blanket ban on recruitment, but before the NSSB was established, would be examined on a case-by-case basis, it said.
The NSF maintained that vacancies arising from terminations or resignations must be referred to the NPSC and NSSB for recruitment through open and competitive examinations. It also called for the termination of appointments made against non-sanctioned posts, regardless of the recruitment process followed.
Tracing its campaign to 2019, the federation said its sustained demand for reforms in government recruitment had contributed to the establishment of the NSSB. Since February 2022, the Board has reportedly filled 1,511 Group C posts through eight examination cycles.
The NSF said it would submit a second list of alleged backdoor appointments involving departments beyond the 16 currently under scrutiny. It also appealed to members of the public to share information about suspected recruitment irregularities, assuring them that the identities of those providing information would be kept confidential.
The federation said its campaign was not aimed at individual employees but at recruitment practices that, it argued, denied Naga youth equal opportunities for government employment.
It reiterated that the agitation would continue until the alleged irregularities were addressed and a transparent, merit-based recruitment system was established across Nagaland.
