Payton Pritchard has gone from fighting for minutes in Boston's rotation to becoming one of the Celtics' most valuable contributors.
Now, the organization is rewarding that development with a major financial commitment.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Pritchard has agreed to a two-year, $44.2 million contract extension with the Celtics.
The agreement also includes a mutual option for the 2029-30 NBA season, giving both sides flexibility as they plan for the future.
The deal represents another major milestone for Pritchard, who has developed from a reserve guard into one of Boston's core players.
Originally selected with the 26th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Pritchard entered the league without a guaranteed role in the Celtics' rotation, However, his shooting ability, confidence and willingness to embrace different responsibilities eventually helped him become an important part of the organization.
Pritchard played a supporting role during Boston's championship-winning 2023-24 season, providing scoring and energy off the bench as the Celtics captured their 18th NBA title.
His contributions became even more significant the following season.
During the 2024-25 campaign, Pritchard averaged 14.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 40.7% from beyond the arc. His production earned him the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award, further establishing his reputation as one of the league's most effective reserve guards.
But Pritchard's development did not stop there.
During the 2025-26 regular season, the former Oregon standout took on a larger role in Boston's offense, averaging 17.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists across 79 games.
He also made 50 starts, demonstrating his ability to contribute as more than just a scoring option off the bench.
Pritchard's growth has been one of Boston's biggest success stories in recent years.
His shooting remains one of his greatest strengths, but his ability to create opportunities for teammates and generate offense off the dribble has made him an even more valuable piece of the Celtics' rotation.
And while Pritchard may not have the physical advantages of some of the league's bigger guards, his confidence, quickness and ability to make plays have helped him establish himself as a legitimate offensive threat.
That combination has helped him become one of the more dependable offensive players on Boston's roster.
The new extension also highlights the Celtics' willingness to invest in players who have developed within their organization. Rather than allowing uncertainty to surround Pritchard's long-term future, Boston has reached an agreement that provides the veteran guard with additional financial security.
For Pritchard, the contract is another indication of how far he has come since entering the NBA.
After spending the early stages of his career fighting for consistent minutes, he has developed into a player capable of taking on significant offensive responsibilities.
The agreement also comes at a pivotal time for Boston, as the Celtics prepare for their first season without Jaylen Brown in more than a decade.
Brown's departure to the Philadelphia 76ers leaves a significant void in Boston's offense, creating an opportunity for other players to take on larger roles.

...
For Pritchard, that could mean another increase in responsibility after already establishing himself as one of the team's most reliable offensive contributors.
His experience within the organization, familiarity with its system and ability to create scoring opportunities make him an important piece of Boston's plans moving forward.
By securing Pritchard with a new extension, the Celtics are investing in a player who could become even more valuable as the franchise begins its next chapter without Brown.
And with Pritchard now set to remain part of the Celtics' future, the organization has secured another important contributor as it looks to build toward its next championship opportunity.
