A man opened fire from a vehicle on a public road in Trappes and La Verrière, in the Yvelines department, around 25 to 30 kilometres south-west of Paris.
At least one person was killed and four others were wounded, a police source said.
The suspect was quickly arrested by police in Coignières, the same source said. The incident is reported to have taken place at around 10.30 a.m.
The man was arrested in nearby Coignieres after opening fire in Trappes and neighbouring La Verriere around 10:30 am, police said. Local authorities said they are assessing the toll which could change.
