Former MLB player Trevor Plouffe weighed in on Philadelphia Phillies president Dave Dombrowski’s public warning to Trea Turner following the team’s postseason exit, questioning whether the executive needed to share details of their private conversation with the media.
The Phillies’ 2026 postseason campaign ended on Oct. 1 with a 6-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series at Truist Park. The 2-1 series defeat marked Philadelphia’s earliest postseason exit in five years. Following the loss, Dombrowski addressed Turner’s disappointing season and revealed that he had told the shortstop he needed to improve defensively.
He warned that Turner could lose his position at shortstop if his defensive performance did not improve in 2027. Speaking on the latest episode of Jomboy Media’s Talkin’ Baseball podcast on Friday, Plouffe questioned Dombrowski’s decision to discuss the private meeting publicly. However, he also acknowledged that the Phillies executive had previously used a similar approach with Bryce Harper after the 2025 season, and that it appeared to have worked.
“Trea Turner wants to be a great shortstop for the Philadelphia Phillies, no doubt about it. So, I have no problem with him saying to his face. Does he need to go peacock it to the media? I’m not so sure about that. It kind of feels like Don Dombrowski’s, you know, taken a easy win for himself there a little bit. But at the same time, he’s been around the game a long time, and he’s used this same exact tactic to motivate Bryce Harper, and it kind of worked,” Plouffe said (Timestamp: 51:42).
He added:
“So, maybe putting it out there for everyone to hear, I mean, he thinks it’s going to be added motivation. and honestly, if my GM came out and said … you have to do better, or you’re not going to play shortstop, and said that to the media, it absolutely would light a fire under me for the offseason.”
Turner struggled during the three-game postseason series against Atlanta, recording just one hit in 11 at-bats for a .091 batting average. He also drove in one run with a sacrifice fly.
What did the Phillies’ president, Dave Dombrowski, say about Trea Turner’s disappointing season?
In a news conference on Thursday, Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski reflected on Trea Turner’s performance in the 2026 season, addressing Turner’s defensive performance and making it clear that the shortstop needed to improve to retain his position.
“From a defensive perspective, we are very clear. He knows he has to be better at shortstop. And I told him that’s really mandatory that he’s like that. He feels he can play, and if he plays shortstop like he did in ’25, he can play shortstop. But if plays it like he did in ’26, he can’t. He totally understands that,” Dombrowski said.
He added:
“At this point, but we’ll see what happens. It’s up to him to show us he can do it, and we’ll see, we’ll have fallback opportunities, and some of them may come back for the young players we have.”
Despite his struggles, Turner achieved a major personal milestone by hitting his 200th career home run. The moment occurred on July 20 against the visiting Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park.
