The Spice shopping entre in Rīga is hosting an exhibition "Over the Mountains - to My Family" from October 13th. It is described a gesture of goodwill from artists and a gift to the families of those who have disappeared in the tragic floods in Nepal.
The paintings will be auctioned and all the proceeds will go to the families who lost their loved ones in Nepal.
Andris Tarands' sister Agnese and her husband Raimonds disappeared in Nepal. When asked what Agnese would say about the exhibition, Andris said: "She would be thrilled. I think she's watching all this. And she would love it."
Andris' wife Ieva Taranda painted a work for this auction, which includes the names of all the missing. 68 paintings were donated. Not all of them can be exhibited. However, all of the works can be viewed on this website where you can also register for the auction and bid there.
"That money will go to 33 relatives. 15 families have applied, not all of them wanted it, and we absolutely respect that," Taranda said.
33 people from Latvia are still missing in the devastating floods in Nepal. Several children were orphaned because both their mother and father went on the trip. The exhibition will close and the auction will take place on November 1st.
Latvian Television's Aizliegtais Paņēmiens show this week outlined the identities and life stories of those who went missing.
