Google’s experiment in paying publishers to feed its AI has gained some big names. CNN, Axios, the Financial Times and Forbes are among the newest participants in the company’s News AI pilot program.
The headliner is CNN. On October 15, 2026, the network announced a multi-year partnership with Google to license its content for experimental generative AI features across Google products.
What CNN and Google agreed to
The deal is built around compensation. CNN gets paid for granting Google expanded rights to its content, and the two sides will explore new ways to connect audiences with CNN’s reporting.
How much money is involved remains unknown. Neither company disclosed financial terms.
CNN’s Sam Felix framed the partnership as a way for the network to discover new routes to its audience. The idea is to use Google’s generative AI tools to make CNN’s journalism easier to access.
CNN is not treating Google as an exclusive suitor. The network has indicated that several other commercial AI partnerships are currently under discussion.
A pilot that grew up fast
Google’s News AI pilot launched in December 2025. Its early partners included The Washington Post and Der Spiegel.
As of October 15, 2026, the program covers more than 400 publications worldwide.
The features themselves are fairly concrete. Participants’ content will power AI-generated article summaries and customizable audio briefings. Every output is supposed to carry clear attribution, along with direct links back to the original source.
Why publishers are signing up
Publishers have been watching referral visits decline as AI-generated search results answer readers’ questions before they ever click through to a news site. In response, news organizations have been pursuing two parallel tracks. One is licensing deals that put a price on their content. The other is legal frameworks designed to block unauthorized AI use of their work.
Google’s pilot sits squarely on the first track. It offers publishers payment and attribution in exchange for letting their journalism fuel AI products.
The Skydance factor
CNN’s deal also carries corporate significance. CNN is now part of Skydance, and this is the first partnership the network has announced under that new ownership.
The timing fits the stated ambitions of CEO David Ellison. His vision is to reposition the company as a technology-centric media player rather than a traditional broadcaster.
What this means for publishers and platforms
For the news business, the expansion shows that licensing is becoming a mainstream response to AI rather than a niche experiment. When outlets as different as CNN, Axios, the Financial Times and Forbes all join the same program, it signals a broad acceptance that AI distribution is coming whether publishers like it or not.
With more than 400 publications already in the pilot, any single outlet’s bargaining power may shrink as Google’s supply of licensed content grows. That dynamic helps explain why CNN is publicly flagging other AI talks.
Without knowing what publishers are paid, it is impossible to judge whether these deals actually replace the revenue lost from declining referral traffic or simply soften the blow.
