Bayern Munich made light work of RB Leipzig to claim a 5–1 away victory in the Frauen-Bundesliga, with Klara Bühl scoring twice in a commanding performance that extended the defending champions’ unbeaten league run to 50 matches.
Momoko Tanikawa opened the scoring inside eight minutes before Zenia Mertens’ own goal doubled Bayern’s advantage six minutes later. Bühl struck twice after the break, and Edna Imade added a fifth to cap another convincing afternoon for José Barcala’s side. Marleen Schimmer briefly offered Leipzig a response, but the hosts could not turn that moment into a comeback.
The result was more than another three points for Bayern. It was a reminder of how quickly their quality can turn a competitive fixture into a one-sided contest.
Bayern wasted little time establishing control. Tanikawa’s eighth-minute goal gave the visitors an early foothold, and Leipzig’s afternoon deteriorated further when Mertens inadvertently put the ball into her own net in the 14th minute.
Two goals behind inside the opening quarter-hour, Leipzig faced the difficult task of chasing a side comfortable in possession and dangerous whenever space opened up. Bayern finished with 67 per cent of the ball, 16 shots and nine efforts on target, compared with Leipzig’s four shots on target from 13 attempts.
Those numbers reflected the difference between the teams. Bayern repeatedly found ways to threaten the home defence, while Leipzig struggled to build enough sustained pressure to shift the momentum.
Bühl takes charge after the break
Leipzig needed an early second-half response, but instead found themselves further behind.
Bühl made it 3–0 in the 55th minute, giving Bayern the breathing room to manage the contest on their terms. The Germany international then struck again in the 73rd minute, completing her brace and taking her season tally to six league goals.
Her performance underlined the value of Bayern’s attacking depth. With Tanikawa also influential before being substituted, Bayern had multiple players capable of creating problems for Leipzig rather than relying on one source of inspiration.
Imade, introduced in the 72nd minute, added another goal in the 85th minute. Her finish restored Bayern’s four-goal cushion after Leipzig had briefly threatened to make the closing stages more uncomfortable.
For Leipzig, Schimmer’s 78th-minute goal offered a moment of relief. It was a reward for continuing to push despite the scoreline, but it did little to disguise the defensive problems that had left them chasing the game almost from the beginning.
Gilles steps into goal after Mahmutovic’s dismissal
Bayern’s afternoon took an unexpected turn in the 75th minute when goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic received a straight red card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. The dismissal briefly threatened to complicate an otherwise comfortable evening for the visitors, who had built a four-goal lead through Klara Bühl’s second strike.
With all five substitutions already used, Bayern had no goalkeeper left to bring on. Defender Vanessa Gilles was forced into an unfamiliar role between the posts, turning the closing stages into an unusual test of the champions’ adaptability.
Leipzig capitalised three minutes later when Marleen Schimmer pulled a goal back, offering the hosts a brief glimpse of an opening. Bayern refused to let the disruption derail their performance. Edna Imade restored the four-goal cushion in the 85th minute, ensuring Gilles’ unexpected spell in goal became a footnote to another emphatic victory rather than the defining story of the night.
The result also carried significance beyond the scoreline. Bayern reached 50 consecutive Bundesliga matches without defeat, a remarkable measure of their consistency in domestic competition. The run has been built on sustained quality but performances like this also show how effectively they can turn that quality into results even away from home.
For Leipzig, the challenge is to learn from a defeat in which early setbacks left too much to overcome. Their late goal showed some fight, but Bayern had already established a distance between the sides that proved impossible to close.
Bayern now turn their attention to Wednesday’s Women’s Champions League meeting with Real Madrid. They will arrive with confidence, attacking momentum and another milestone behind them. Leipzig, meanwhile, must regroup after a night when the champions’ precision exposed just how little room there is for error against the league’s strongest side.
