(ANSA) - ROME, 14 OTT - Italy is set to install radars in the Balkans to defend those countries and Italy too, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said Wednesday.
"We are resuming command (of the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) mission) with General (Roberto) Vergori, and we do so with a commitment that will continue even when KFOR scales back its operations in Kosovo, because for us, the Balkans are a cornerstone of our security.
"Securing the Balkans—and looking to the future by potentially installing radars there that allow us to defend both these nations and our own country against threats—is of fundamental importance," Crosetto said on the sidelines of the KFOR mission change-of-command ceremony in Pristina.
"If you consider that the missiles striking airports in Saudi Arabia were built by the Houthis—not by sophisticated engineers—yet reached speeds of 8,500 kilometers per hour, you begin to understand the threats facing all nations in the future.
"It highlights the importance of maintaining a presence in friendly border countries to establish a joint defense shield capable of preempting such threats," Crosetto added. (ANSA).
