Bitcoin is supposed to be the main character of every crypto exchange. On Upbit, South Korea’s largest crypto platform, XRP stole the scene for a second consecutive day.
On October 15, 2026, XRP/KRW spot volume on Upbit hit approximately $145.57 million. That figure topped both Bitcoin and Ethereum, which is not how most global order books tend to look.
The numbers behind XRP’s lead
Bitcoin’s KRW pair recorded $126.50 million in volume on the same day. Ethereum trailed further back at $92.09 million.
XRP’s haul represented 11.74% of Upbit’s total trading volume. One token commanding more than a tenth of a major exchange’s activity is a notable concentration.
The lead held up when volumes cooled the following day. On October 16, XRP posted $108.3 million in trading volume, compared with $95.3 million for Bitcoin and $62.7 million for Ethereum.
The price action was far less dramatic. XRP traded around $1.34 during the stretch, slipping modestly even as volume climbed.
There was also no meaningful Kimchi premium. That term describes the gap that sometimes opens when Korean prices run above global ones, and XRP’s Upbit price sat nearly level with Binance.
The missing premium matters. It suggests Korean traders were swapping XRP back and forth at global prices, not chasing it into a locally inflated bubble.
Why Korean traders piled into Upbit
The volume spike lined up with a regulatory move. South Korea’s Financial Intelligence Unit blocked access to 27 offshore exchanges, which pushed more trading toward domestic venues like Upbit.
The equity market added another push. Turbulence in Korean stocks led retail investors, particularly those in their 40s and 50s, to rotate out of local shares and into crypto.
XRP’s dominance on Upbit is not new, either. The token logged cumulative trading volume exceeding $1 trillion on the exchange in 2025, outpacing Bitcoin over that period.
Korean trading also carries real weight in XRP’s global picture. Upbit has accounted for approximately 15% of global XRP spot volume in recent periods, making the country one of the token’s most important liquidity hubs.
What this means for XRP and Korean markets
For XRP, the most immediate takeaway is liquidity. Deep, consistent volume on a major fiat on-ramp means large orders can move through with less slippage, which matters to traders of every size.
The flip side is concentration risk. When a meaningful slice of a token’s global spot activity runs through a single country’s exchange, local policy shifts can echo far beyond that market.
The FIU’s offshore block illustrates the point. Regulators did not target XRP, yet their decision helped funnel activity onto Upbit and into XRP’s order book.
The absence of a Kimchi premium is the quiet detail worth tracking. Historically, sharp local premiums have signaled overheated Korean demand, so price parity during a volume surge suggests arbitrage channels are functioning and the market is not wildly out of step with global venues.
For now, the two-day data tells a clear story. On Korea’s biggest exchange, XRP is not the supporting act, and Bitcoin and Ethereum are the ones playing catch-up.
