Halloween means it’s the season of the witch — in costume, that is. Famous fictional bad girls continue to shine on film and inspire designer runway moments. Familiar Halloween figures include the Wicked Witch of the West from “The Wizard of Oz,” Evillene from “The Wiz,” Maleficent from Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty” and Elphaba from “Wicked.”
Fun fact: the witch remains one of Halloween’s most popular classic costumes, perhaps because it is also one of the most fashionable, from head to toe.
Thinking about putting this costume together? Here’s what you’ll need: a wide-brimmed, pointy, cone-shaped hat and a black dress — Victorian era or 1990s Goth will do — accented with purple, green and orange for Halloween. To keep your witch costume fashionably chic, pointy-toe black lace-up boots or pumps are the perfect finishing touch. That should be easy these days, since we’re seeing a return of uber-pointy-toe shoes on the runway.
Designers who continue to embrace punk and Goth styles include Alexander McQueen, Comme des Garçons, Vivienne Westwood, Versace, Ann Demeulemeester, Rick Owens, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs and Gareth Pugh amongst others. Their interpretations of the witch archetype keep the classic Halloween costume relevant and enduring.
From FN and the Fairchild Archive, we’ve gathered a selection of wickedly stylish to wonderfully wonky boots and shoes from the runway, perfect for pairing to any witch-inspired costume.
