Liverpool Make Felix Nmecha Contact as Midfield Search Intensifies Under Andoni Iraola
Liverpool have made contact with the representatives of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha as the club steps up plans to add to the engine room, according to Sky Germany. The enquiry is described as an early one, part of wider market checks rather than a move at an advanced stage, but it offers another indicator of where attention is currently focused.
With Andoni Iraola now established in the role and given time to assess the group at close quarters, Liverpool are understood to be shaping the next phase of their midfield rebuild. The expectation is that a new central option will be pursued, whether that lands in January or next summer, and the club appear to be keeping several profiles active at the same time.
Felix Nmecha Enters Liverpool Midfield Picture
Nmecha is one of the latest names to surface. The 26-year-old has entered his fourth season at Dortmund and remains under contract for more than three years, which leaves the German club in a stable position. The report states there is “no immediate cause for concern” on Dortmund’s side, so this is best viewed as exploratory groundwork rather than a developing negotiation.
That fits the pattern of how Liverpool often operate in the market. Multiple targets are monitored in parallel, with information gathered on availability, cost, contract conditions and suitability before priorities are refined. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Monaco’s Lamine Camara are still regarded among the leading midfield options, while other names such as Manu Kone and Adam Wharton continue to circulate in the background.

Why Nmecha Could Appeal to Iraola
Nmecha’s profile is easy to understand in this context. At 6ft 3in, he brings physicality and athletic range, but the attraction goes beyond size. He is comfortable receiving and carrying possession, covers ground effectively and has been used as a dynamic box-to-box midfielder. Dortmund boss Niko Kovac has labelled him a “total professional”, a description that will do no harm during Liverpool’s due diligence.
His Bundesliga output this season has also been notable. Despite modest goal numbers overall, he sits among Dortmund’s more productive attacking contributors and has posted strong underlying figures for regaining the ball high up the pitch and creating chances. That blend of energy, recovery work and composure on the ball would make him a logical candidate for a side seeking greater balance in midfield.
Liverpool Transfer Plans Point to Midfield Priority
The need is understandable. Iraola has leaned heavily on Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Trey Nyoni, with fewer signs of trust in the alternatives so far. Wataru Endo has yet to feature under the head coach, while James McConnell has remained on the fringes. Liverpool’s recruitment team therefore appears to be testing the market for a player capable of adding competition, depth and perhaps a different physical dimension.
Whether Felix Nmecha becomes the chosen solution remains unclear. For now, Liverpool’s contact looks like one strand of a broader search, but it is a relevant one, and it reinforces the club’s determination to strengthen midfield when the right opportunity presents itself.
Our View
This is the kind of report that immediately grabs attention because it feels credible without pretending anything is close. The important detail is not that Liverpool have suddenly found their next midfielder, it is that the club are clearly moving through serious options and doing proper checks early.
Nmecha is an interesting name because he seems to tick a few boxes the squad could really use. There is athleticism there, there is size, and there appears to be enough technical quality to play in a high-tempo side. That matters when the current midfield group can look a little overworked, especially if Iraola wants intensity from first minute to last.
What stands out most is the idea of variety. Mac Allister, Szoboszlai and Gravenberch all bring quality, but a different profile can change the entire balance of the side. Liverpool do not need to collect midfielders for the sake of it, they need one who gives the coach another route in tough games.
There is also something reassuring about hearing that Liverpool are not fixated on one target. Scott, Camara, Nmecha, and others being considered suggests a process rather than a gamble. If this squad is going to evolve properly under Iraola, midfield feels like the right place to start, and Nmecha looks like a name worth watching closely.
