Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) has performed 100 cataract surgeries with assistance from a medical team from China's Yunnan province over three days, from 12 to 14 October.
The surgeries were conducted under the "Brightness Action" initiative as part of the "Yunnan Hand in Hand" programme, which was launched at the DMCH auditorium today (15 October) under the theme "Bright Eyes" (Uzzol Chokh).
Speaking as the chief guest at the event, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain said China had long been an important partner in developing Bangladesh's health sector.
He said China had assured continued cooperation in areas including hospital construction, medical equipment and doctor training.
"China has stood by Bangladesh in economic development, infrastructure and healthcare since our independence," he said, adding that bilateral ties were based on friendship and mutual trust.
Work is also underway to establish a major hospital in Nilphamari with Chinese assistance, the minister said.
He added that such initiatives would support the government's efforts to ensure quality and accessible healthcare for people across the country.
Dr Liu Yuyin, charge d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka; Prof Dr Provat Chandra Biswas, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services; and Brig Gen AKM Farhad Hossain, director of DMCH, also attended the event.
After the ceremony, the minister spoke with patients who had undergone cataract surgery and enquired about their recovery.
