Police in Qatar have arrested former Bangladesh Air Force chief Air Vice Marshal (retd) Sheikh Abdul Hannan, who is accused in a corruption case in Dhaka.
Qatar police took him into custody on 15 October, and Interpol informed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) by email, confirmed Aktarul Islam, deputy director of the anti-graft agency's Public Relations Division, to The Business Standard this afternoon (18 October).
ACC Secretary Md Saidur Rahman Khan will provide details on this matter during the commission's regular media briefing later today.
Hannan received his commission in the Bangladesh Air Force in 1984. He took charge as the force's 16th chief on 12 June 2021 and retired on 11 June 2024.
According to ACC investigation findings and case details, Hannan acquired assets worth more than Tk3.28 crore, inconsistent with his known sources of income. Also, he reportedly conducted suspicious transactions amounting to Tk27.63 crore through six personal bank accounts.
He is reportedly involved in money laundering by transferring, relocating, and converting illegally obtained funds. Based on these findings, the ACC in July last year approved filing charges under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, Money Laundering Prevention Act, and Prevention of Corruption Act.
Hannan's wife Tahmida Begum is also accused in the same case. She is accused of amassing, with her husband's assistance, more than Tk1.91 crore in assets beyond her known income sources. The ACC also found evidence of suspicious transactions worth Tk1.18 crore through 32 bank accounts in her name.
The ACC's investigation also found information that Hannan has assets abroad, particularly in Canada and Dubai.
