BATANG KALI: A search and rescue operation is underway for two hikers swept away by strong currents while swimming at Lubuk Tupai Waterfall in Kampung Hulu Rening.
The two were part of a group of six who had gone hiking in the area.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ashrul Riezal Asbar said the department received a distress call at 12.13pm.
Two of the hikers had entered the river for a swim but were swept away by strong currents and disappeared underwater, he said.
Ashrul said rescue personnel faced difficulties reaching the waterfall due to its remote location.
"Firefighters had to trek between four and five kilometres uphill from the base camp in Kampung Hulu Rening to reach the scene.
"Personnel from the Batang Kali Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived at the waterfall at 1.05pm, while firefighters from the Kuala Kubu Bharu Fire and Rescue Station reached the location at 2.28pm," he said.
He said rescuers were conducting an initial assessment of the area before proceeding with rescue efforts.
A total of 10 personnel from the Kuala Kubu Bharu Fire and Rescue Station and Batang Kali Volunteer Fire Brigade were involved in the operation.
