Shabwa – Local authorities in Shabwa Governorate, southern Yemen, revealed details of a deadly Houthi attack that killed dozens on Monday, while the group also issued a statement regarding the incident.
The local authority in Shabwa Governorate condemned "in the strongest terms the attack launched by the Houthi militias on Monday, during which the Martyr Ahmed Al-Sulaimani Training Center was targeted with a number of ballistic missiles."
The Shabwa authorities stated that, according to initial statistics, the attack resulted in the deaths of more than 53 recruits and injuries to more than 200 others, all new recruits in the internal security forces, who were receiving security training and qualification at the center.
The local authority considered the attack "a treacherous and bloody assault targeting newly recruited soldiers in their training and preparation phase, representing a highly dangerous military escalation and a blatant attack on the security and stability of Shabwa Governorate. It further reveals the extent of the threats posed by the Houthi militias to military and security installations and the lives of their personnel."
The local authority held the Houthi group fully responsible for the attack and the resulting casualties, emphasizing that "the magnitude of the tragedy cannot be reduced to mere condemnation and denunciation, but rather necessitates taking immediate military and security measures to prevent the recurrence of such attacks."
In contrast, the Houthi group stated that its forces targeted the Al-Alam camp, which it claimed was "run by Saudi officers," according to its statement, asserting that "dozens were killed and wounded."
The group warned against responding to calls to recruit fighters for what it termed "death traps."
Shabwa Governorate is rich in energy resources and located in the middle of Yemen's southern coast, overlooking the Gulf of Aden. It is home to the Balhaf liquefied natural gas terminal, which constitutes the largest industrial investment in the country.
Earlier this month, government forces launched an offensive to retake areas seized by the Houthis and recapture positions near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This comes as the group maintains a siege on Taiz, the last major urban stronghold of anti-Houthi forces in Yemen's southern highlands.
The fighting in Yemen has become a new front in the wider regional conflict, which began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.
The Houthis have escalated their attacks on Saudi Arabia, targeting the international airport in the capital, Riyadh, and facilities belonging to the Aramco oil company. Meanwhile, Saudi warplanes have launched several airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen.
