The Black Starlets Head Coach, Kassim Ocansey, has expressed satisfaction with his side’s 3-1 victory over Benin at the ongoing WAFU B U17 Championship, while acknowledging that there is still room for improvement in the team’s performance.
Ghana secured their second win of the competition with an impressive display against Benin, scoring three goals to strengthen their position in the tournament and boost their hopes of progressing to the next stage.
Despite the convincing score, Ocansey admitted that his players lost concentration after establishing a two-goal advantage, allowing Benin to get back into the game with a goal.
“It means we have done a great job and we are satisfied. We lost concentration after we took the 2-0 lead and allowed Benin to come into the game and they got their goal. But it was good we came back stronger in the second half to finish the game with the third goal,” he said.
According to Ocansey, Ghana could have scored more goals, but he remained satisfied with the outcome while emphasising the need for continued improvement in the team’s attacking play.
“We could have scored more than three but Alhamdulillah we are okay. We worked on goal scoring at training and we have scored three today so we are okay. If your team creates chances and they end up scoring three, it’s okay but there is more room for improvement,” he added.
The victory represents another positive step for Ghana at the WAFU B U17 Championship as Ocansey and his technical team continue to work towards improving the team’s overall performance ahead of their remaining fixtures.
The win, he said, was the first achievement of the team as it edged them closer to qualification, insisting that the team was bent on achieving the second objective, which is to win the ultimate trophy.
Ghana continued their impressive campaign at the WAFU B U17 Championship with a convincing win over Benin, ensuring qualification for the last four and keeping their ambitions of securing a place at the continental showpiece firmly on track.
Ocansey disclosed that the team arrived at the tournament with three clear objectives: reaching the semi-finals, qualifying for the U-17 AFCON by reaching the final, and ultimately winning the trophy.
The Black Starlets coach expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress, insisting that the first objective had been accomplished, with two more targets left to pursue.
“Coming here, we had three targets; to qualify for the semi-final, to qualify for the AFCON by being finalists and to lift the trophy. So far, the first target of making it to the semi-final has been achieved. We have two more to chase; we’ll keep chasing,” he said.
Ghana will now turn their attention to their remaining group-stage fixture as they seek to maintain their momentum and build on their strong start.
