Game stores are being shut down in South Africa. What does this mean for you and your job?
GAME STORES SHUTTING DOWN IN SOUTH AFRICA
As of October this year, Massmart has 96 stores in South Africa which is down from 150 stores in 2019. In February, Massmart confirmed that they were considering closing around 20 stores in Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. They did not share a list of which branches would be closed. However, an employee reportedly said it was Amanzimtoti, Ballito, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg and The Pavillion.
So, what does this mean for your wallet?
- A closing-down sale. Retailers usually heavily discount their stock before closing down. Back in 2022, when Game closed eight stores, there were large discounts.
- Vouchers and gift cards. It would be advisable to use your gift cards and vouchers while you still can.
- Fewer shopping options. With Game closing down, there will be fewer retailer options for you to choose from.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOUR JOBS?
Massmart has not revealed how many jobs will be affected this time. The 2022 closure of eight stores put around 700 jobs at risk. However, Massmart reportedly said that when stores do convert to Walmart them staff will be transferred accordingly.
Massmart also said they are continuing to invest in the remaining Game stores.
