The Yobe state governor, Mai Mala Buni, has charged the newly inaugurated commissioners and chairmen of the seventeen local government areas of the state to prioritise public welfare, strengthen accountability and ensure effective delivery of government programmes.
The governor gave the charge Friday in Damaturu during the swearing-in ceremony of political appointees and the council chairmen.
He admonished that their appointments must translate into improved living conditions and meaningful development for the people of the state.
In particular, he tasked the council chairmen on democratic governance that delivers tangible benefits at the grassroots through people-oriented policies and responsive leadership.
“Serve the people diligently and deliver more dividends of democracy. Please, do not let them down,” he said.
The governor also urged political stakeholders to sustain peace and avoid actions capable of triggering violence, assuring residents of his administration’s continued collaboration with security agencies to protect lives and property.
The newly appointed officials are Dr. Abubakar Bukar Kagu, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice; Dauda Alhaji Idi; Commissioner for Livestock Development, and Barrister Fatima Ibrahim Makintami, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Justice.
Buni said the appointments were based on merit and experience, adding that they were intended to fill vacancies and strengthen the state’s administrative capacity.
He also highlighted developments in the health sector, including recent hip replacement and maxillofacial surgeries, as well as postgraduate residency accreditation secured by the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital and Specialist Hospital, Damaturu.
According to the governor, investments in civil service training, healthcare and institutional reforms were part of efforts to improve the quality of public services across the state.
He therefore commended the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission for conducting a peaceful local government election, describing credible electoral processes as “important to strengthening democratic institutions.”
