(ANSA) - ROME, 23 OTT - Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala on Friday called on the city's shopkeepers not to close their stores this weekend out of fear of a repeat of the shocking rioting that took place last Saturday and Sunday.
"I urge them not to do so, but obviously, all I can do is make this appeal," Sala told reporters.
"Ultimately, it is their decision.
"I'll try to go shopping in a store myself".
The centre-left politician also complained that he has not had much moral support from Premier Giorgia Meloni's centre-right government following the unrest.
"In my opinion, it wouldn't hurt to have more institutional solidarity," Sala said when asked if he had expected a phone call from Meloni.
"I didn't receive a call, but it's up to each individual to decide how to engage with local governments and mayors.
"I think it's a mistake not to discuss this at this moment in time: political differences exist, but when faced with certain problems, we need to look beyond them.
"This is not meant to be a controversial; if anyone wants to interpret it as such, it isn't".
