After an inconsistent 2025 season, Zyon McCollum has taken a significant step forward, and his numbers against some of the NFL's top receivers make a strong case that he belongs among the league's best cornerbacks. McCollum has lined up against top opposing receivers on 62 occasions this season, allowing just seven targets and one reception for 18 yards. He has also recorded four passes defensed in those matchups while holding opposing quarterbacks to a 39.6 passer rating when targeting him.
Those numbers are ridiculous when considering the responsibility McCollum carries in Todd Bowles' defense. Tampa Bay frequently asks its cornerbacks to hold up in man coverage, often without consistent safety help, making the position particularly demanding. His performance against the Dallas Cowboys was another example of just how far he has developed. McCollum helped neutralize CeeDee Lamb, one of the league's most dangerous receivers, while also limiting George Pickens' opportunities. Against Lamb specifically, McCollum lined up across from him 11 times, allowing zero receptions on one target.
What stands out most about McCollum's improvement is his ability to turn his athletic traits into consistent production. His length and speed have always given him the physical tools to compete with elite receivers, but his improved positioning, anticipation, and understanding of route concepts have made him considerably more difficult to beat. The four-pass defense is particularly encouraging because McCollum is actively disrupting passing windows and making plays on the football when quarterbacks challenge him. For a Buccaneers defense that has dealt with inconsistent tackling, communication issues, and questions surrounding its overall execution, McCollum's emergence has been one of the few things the coaching staff can consistently rely on. The biggest question now is whether he can maintain this level of play throughout the season. Five games don't automatically make someone an All-Pro, but allowing one reception across 62 matchups against top receivers is the kind of production that deserves serious recognition.
