RHODES, October 2026 — A 25-year-old man died at Stegna beach in Rhodes on Wednesday after floodwaters swept his car into the sea during a severe storm on the island.
Authorities raised the alarm after they found the man unconscious on the beach, near the village of Archangelos on the east coast of Rhodes, in the Dodecanese. The Hellenic Coast Guard and the Fire Service then responded to the scene.
Rushing water from a nearby stream carried a total of four vehicles into the sea at Stegna beach, local reports said.
Authorities have not officially released the man’s name, and it remains unclear exactly how he came to be caught in the floodwaters.
Stegna beach storm response
Heavy rain hit Rhodes from the early hours of Wednesday 14 October, turning roads into rivers in several parts of the island. As a result, authorities sent a warning through the 112 emergency number at 10:44am local time, urging residents of the Rhodes regional unit to limit their movements.
In addition, the Municipality of Rhodes closed part of the road from Archangelos to Malona for safety reasons. Bus services on the Faliraki route also stopped.
Lightning struck the Rhodes station of public broadcaster ERT South Aegean, damaging its electrical system and taking its radio program off the air.
Weather across the Dodecanese
Before the storm peaked, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service issued an emergency bulletin that forecast locally heavy rain and thunderstorms across the Dodecanese until Wednesday afternoon.
Severe weather has also hit other Greek islands this month. Greek City Times reported on 4 October on flooding and rescues in Ierapetra, Crete.
Live rainfall readings for Rhodes are available from the National Observatory of Athens weather network. So far, officials have not said when they will release further details about the man’s death.
