Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has said the government is working to align Bangladesh's English-medium education system with international standards and bring its different aspects under a unified framework.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the "Golden School Achieve" event, organised by UK-based international education board Learning Resource Network (LRN) at a hotel in the capital, according to the press release.
The minister said work on the initiative had begun. He also highlighted plans to address challenges involving examination systems and question paper leaks.
LRN Chief Executive Dr Zuhaib Tariq, a British citizen, presided over the programme. Md Shoaib Chowdhury, Bangladesh country head of LRN, delivered the welcome address.
Guests included Syed Habibur Rahman, investment and trade manager at the British High Commission in Dhaka; Professor Abdullah Al Mamun, member of the University Grants Commission; and Professor Dr Khan Mainuddin Md Sohel, director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education.
Professor SM Kamal Uddin Haider, secretary of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka; Professor Humayun Ahmed, college inspector of the Dhaka Education Board; and Mohammad Nuruzzaman, CEO of Daffodil University, also attended.
Milon urged LRN to further improve the quality of education provided to English-medium students.
He said the government was focusing on developing human capital and that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had allocated the highest budget to the education sector for this purpose.
The minister also stressed the need for extensive study of Bangla, noting its limited presence in many areas of medical and engineering education and at public universities.
More than 50 teachers and students received awards at the ceremony.
