KUALA LUMPUR: Two Malaysian nationals are receiving medical treatment for minor injuries following Typhoon Champi in Taiwan, the Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre in Taipei had confirmed the matter and was providing the necessary consular assistance to both individuals.
“(The centre) remains in close communication with Malaysian student groups and the relevant local authorities to monitor developments and safeguard the welfare of Malaysians in Taiwan,” the ministry said in a statement today.
Malaysians requiring consular assistance, or those with information about other Malaysian nationals who may need help in affected areas, are urged to contact the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre in Taipei at +886 972 349 343 or by email at mwtaipei@kln.gov.my.
Wisma Putra said it was closely monitoring the typhoon, which had brought strong winds and heavy rainfall, with adverse weather conditions expected to persist in parts of Taiwan.
The typhoon had also caused widespread flight cancellations and disruptions to ferry services. Malaysians with upcoming travel plans are advised to check their flight or ferry status directly with the respective operators before travelling to airports or terminals.
The ministry advised Malaysians residing in or visiting Taiwan to monitor local weather advisories, avoid coastal and mountainous areas, and comply with safety instructions and evacuation orders issued by local authorities.
It said local authorities had evacuated residents from areas prone to flooding and landslides, including areas near a landslide dam in Hualien County. Malaysians were advised to avoid unnecessary travel to these areas.
Wisma Putra also urged Malaysians to register and regularly update their contact details through the e-Konsular portal at https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my to facilitate timely communication and access to consular assistance.
