The board of the Latvian Farmers' Union (LZS) decided to resign on Tuesday, October 20th following disappointing results in the recent 15th Saeima election, the party informed the LETA newswire.
LZS is one of the constituent parties of the Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) which went from being a main coalition member to not winning a single seat in the October 3rd election. This is the first time in its 24-year existence that the union will not be represented in the Saeima.
However, the resignations are more of a formality than anything else. The current board will continue its work until the next party congress when elections for a new board and party chairman are scheduled early next year. Until then, regional conferences will be held, and members of party branches will nominate candidates for the positions of board members and chairman.
The LZS board is currently chaired by the Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis, who was elected as the party chairman in 2023 and unanimously re-elected in 2025. He spearheaded the whole ZZS election campaign and was its chosen candidate for Prime Minister.
The deputy chairmen of the board are the Minister of Agriculture Armands Krauze and Saeima member Harijs Rokpelnis. The board also includes Vineta Ķine, Uldis Augulis, Kaspars Melnis, Miks Balodis, Hardijs Vents, Dainis Karols, Edgars Mekšs, Inguna Paredne and Andris Rāviņš.
