He first joined in 2021, cutting his teeth on over 300 news stories before moving on to features and how-tos. A one-time OnePlus die-hard who genuinely couldn't stand Samsung, he's since done a full about-face — he now daily-drives a Galaxy S24 Ultra and keeps an S23+, S22+, and his old S20 within arm's reach, which gives him a lot of hardware to put through its paces.
He's a medical doctor with a decade-plus obsession for consumer tech, and his coverage has also appeared on How-To Geek and Android Authority. When he's not buried in Google's apps or a Samsung settings menu, he's trying to get his chess rating past 1500 or playing table tennis/football.
There are so many things I don't like about the iPhone: you still can't download apps outside the App Store (in the US), the typing experience is terrible, and it offers less customization than Android.
However, the one thing I've always envied, at least since it was introduced in 2018, is the built-in battery health tool that tells you how much of your battery's original capacity is left.
Then, Google brought a battery health score to Pixel phones with Android 16 in 2025. I thought Samsung would follow suit. But fast-forward to 2026, and there's still no battery health tool on my Galaxy S24 Ultra.
However, you can dig it out of a hidden log on your phone. I'll tell you how.
You may or may not have battery health in your Samsung settings
My S24 Ultra doesn't, and I'm not sure why
The battery health checker is such a simple but genuinely useful concept.
Every battery is rated for a certain number of charge cycles before it drops to about 80% of its original capacity. The phone counts the cycles you've used and measures how much capacity the battery can still hold, then shows that as a health percentage.
I recently learned that Samsung has had something similar in battery settings since One UI 7. But it's not available to everyone, and I'm not sure why.
You may or may not have it depending on your device, region, and One UI version. My US-model Galaxy S24 Ultra running One UI 8.5 doesn't.
The closest thing I could find is the diagnostics tool in Samsung Members that tells you whether your battery is normal, weak, or bad. But a normal battery could be at 99% or 82% health, so it really doesn't tell me much.
Thankfully, there's a hidden way to check.
You'll need a PC
Samsung has a hidden SysDump menu that can generate a full system log with lots of information about your phone, including battery data.
You can access it by turning off Auto Blocker and following these steps:
- Open Settings, go to Security and privacy > Auto Blocker, and turn it off.
- Then launch the Phone app and dial *#9900#.
- Select Run dumpstate/logcat and wait for it to finish (it may take a while).
- Tap OK on the Dump Result box. It'll take you back to the initial screen.
- Select Copy to sdcard(include CP Ramdump). After a short while, it'll show a success message.
- Open My Files and go to the log folder.
-
Find and open the .zip file that starts with dumpstate_.
- Unselect all, select dumpstate.txt, and extract it. It's usually a large file (mine was 235MB).
-
Send the file to your laptop, then open PowerShell in the same folder as the file.
-
Paste the code: Select-String -Path .\dumpstate.txt -Pattern "mSavedBattery". It'll pull up all your battery data.
You must first turn off Auto Blocker before inputting the code because it blocks most dial codes. Also, this may not work on every Galaxy, as carrier-locked phones in the US often block the SysDump menu.
You can open the dumpstate.txt file on your phone. But when I searched, the battery fields didn't show up at all, even though they're in the file.
The likely explanation is that the phone only loads parts of the doc at a time (it's over 120k pages), so the search tool can't find fields much lower down. PowerShell on a PC found them right away, though.
What the numbers actually mean
You only need to pay attention to three of them
The log lists a handful of battery fields, but these are the ones that matter:
- mSavedBatteryAsoc: your battery's current capacity as a percentage of its original capacity. Mine was 99.
- mSavedBatteryBsoh: Samsung's battery state of health estimate. It's the equivalent of the iPhone's battery health. Mine was 98.
- mSavedBatteryUsage: your cycle count multiplied by 100. Mine read 59072, so my battery has gone through about 590 full charge cycles.
So after 590 cycles, my S24 Ultra battery still holds around 98% of its original capacity.
Since the battery is designed to retain at least 80% of its original capacity after 2,000 full charge cycles, my battery should be around 94% health. So, it's performing better than expected.
Heat seems to matter more than full charges for long-term wear, so try not to let your phone run hot for long periods.
Also, the dumpstate file can include personal details like account names and app activity, so don't share it. Delete it from your phone and PC after checking your numbers.
For reference, here's a guide to the ratings of recent Samsung flagships and main competitors based on the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) database:
| Device | Charge cycles |
|---|---|
| Galaxy S26 series | 1,200 |
| Galaxy S24, S25 series | 2,000 |
| Pixel 11 series | 1,000 |
| iPhone 16, 17, 18 series | 1,000 |
Samsung should make battery health available for everyone
Samsung clearly tracks battery health, and your phone has all the records. So it's frustrating that the manufacturer won't make it easily accessible in the settings app.
If you always wake up to a dead battery, you might want to set up a routine to limit overnight drain.
