Netizens criticise Malaysian malls for prioritising Halloween decorations over Deepavali, calling for more colourful displays celebrating Indian culture
NETIZENS have expressed disappointment with shopping malls for seemingly giving greater prominence to Halloween decorations than to Deepavali, a major festival celebrated by Malaysia’s Indian community.
Taking to social media, some questioned why malls appeared to be placing more emphasis on Halloween, which is not traditionally celebrated on the same scale in Malaysia, instead of showcasing decorations for the upcoming Deepavali festival.
They argued that Halloween-themed displays should not overshadow Deepavali celebrations, which are known for their vibrant colours, traditional attire, festive food and elaborate decorations.
“Malaysia does not celebrate Halloween, but we celebrate Deepavali. I would like malls in Malaysia to have Deepavali-themed decorations instead of Halloween decorations,” one netizen wrote.
“We want Deepavali decorations at the malls, not Halloween. I want to see beautiful and colourful kolam designs, not pumpkins. Since when did Halloween become a national celebration?” another asked.
“We want the colours, the outfits, the food, the decorations and the music. We already have the Hungry Ghost Festival. No need for Halloween lah. We want sarees, lehengas, accessories, henna and murukku. These are what should feature prominently in mall decorations in Malaysia at the moment,” another commenter wrote.
“I want colours, not black and orange everywhere,” another netizen said.
