PETALING JAYA: Melaka Bersatu Youth chief Jefri Safry has quit the party to join Wawasan after citing a loss of confidence in the party's direction and leadership.
Jefri, who was also the Jasin Bersatu division chief, said his decision stemmed from differences with the party’s top leadership, particularly over rumours of possible political cooperation between Bersatu and Pakatan Harapan, Harian Metro reported.
He said political struggles should be guided by principles, sincerity, and the interests of the people, rather than power struggles or narrow political interests.
Jefri said joining Wawasan offered him a new platform to pursue a political struggle focused on Muslim unity, social harmony, and public welfare.
He said the move would not affect his commitment to serving the community and helping those in need, regardless of their background, race or political beliefs.
“Parties can change and political platforms can shift, but my commitment to the people remains a responsibility that must be fulfilled,” he said after an event in Duyong, Melaka.
“I may be leaving Bersatu, but I have never abandoned the struggle for the people.
“Positions and political parties are not everything. What matters most is sincerity, trustworthiness, and responsibility to the community.”
Bersatu has been linked to speculation of a possible pact with PH, particularly after leaders from their Melaka chapters attended a closed-door dinner at a hotel in Melaka.
Bersatu, a Perikatan Nasional component party, then confirmed it will contest the Melaka polls on Nov 14 under its own logo amid a rift with PAS, which leads the coalition.
Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali also said the party was ready to hold talks on electoral pacts with other parties despite previously ruling out such cooperation.
Melaka PH chairman Adly Zahari previously said the state chapter was finalising negotiations with parties that shared similar aspirations, including Bersatu, to form a “PH Plus” alliance for the state election.
