By Zaira Torres: Past University of Belize statistics showed that 67.5% of graduates were women and only 32.5% were men. This should concern us!
As a mother of two boys, I worry about their future. Is our education system doing enough for our boys? Not every child learns the same way. Many boys need more movement, practical lessons, and hands-on learning instead of sitting in classrooms for hours.
My high school son tells me that much of what he learns no longer feels useful for his future because he sees so few opportunities in Belize.
And can we blame him? We are living in a time when blue-collar workers( mason, electricians, contractors, plumbers )
can earn more than white-collar professionals! His father has a master’s degree, yet a skilled mason can earn or earns more than him monthly!
Society pressures young men to earn money, become independent, and provide for their families. Could this be why more are choosing trades over university?
I celebrate the success of our women, but I am deeply concerned about our boys. If they begin losing hope in education, what will happen to their confidence, their future, and their role in society?
Our education system needs to give more attention to the needs of boys before we lose their interest completely!
ARE OUR BOYS FAILING THE EDUCATION SYSTEM, OR IS THE EDUCATION SYSTEM FAILING OUR BOYS?
