Accounts for Algarve Golf Courses Ltd, filed in the UK at Companies House on 8 October, disclose a 2025 profit of £6,388,272 for its wholly owned Portuguese subsidiary, Sociedade do Golfe da Quinta do Lago SA. The subsidiary, which owns and operates golf courses, ended the year with capital and reserves of £35.6 million.
The UK company’s directors expressed satisfaction with the Portuguese subsidiary’s performance. The figures relate specifically to the golf business, rather than the combined activities.
Denis O’Brien acquired Quinta do Lago in 1998. Its development since then has broadened the appeal of a destination traditionally associated with golf and residential property.
The Campus, which opened in 2018, added facilities for professional athletes, recreational sports enthusiasts and active families, including tennis, padel, swimming, fitness and rehabilitation.
The Conrad acquisition announced in December 2024 and reported in The Portugal News was described at the time by PLMJ, the law firm advising Quinta do Lago on the deal, as Portugal’s largest single-hotel asset transaction. This broader offering illustrates how Quinta do Lago is continuing to develop its place in the Algarve’s tourism landscape, bringing golf, hospitality, food and beverage, and an active outdoor lifestyle into one destination.
Quinta do Lago’s food and beverage scene brings together 14 restaurants and bars, creating a vibrant culinary landscape that showcases the best of Portuguese and international cuisine at one of the Algarve’s most renowned resorts. From relaxed beach bars to premium steakhouses, the resort caters to a range of tastes and budgets, offering dining experiences for different preferences and occasions. The story began in 1972 with Casa Velha, which introduced traditional Portuguese cuisine to the resort. Since then, Quinta do Lago’s gastronomic offering has evolved, embracing diverse culinary influences and establishing itself as a destination for food lovers.
Mr O’Brien’s ambition in golf led him to PGA Catalunya in 2008, changing the name in 2022 to Camiral Golf & Wellness, and then Camiral, a Quinta do Lago in 2025. The resort is near Girona in northeastern Spain´s Catalonia region, with Camiral set to become a major sporting milestone. Ryder Cup Europe confirmed in 2025 that the venue will welcome the European and United States Ryder Cup teams in 2031, marking the second time Spain will host the competition, following Valderrama in 1997.
As a very talkative child, Bruno knew from an early age that communication was his path. When a teacher suggested he should become a journalist, everything clicked. In 2018, aged just 17, he moved to Coimbra to study Journalism and Communication. Bruno has been working at The Portugal News since 2022 and is currently the Editor, and is happy to be part of a media company based where he lived until moving permanently to Coimbra in 2023. His interests include national politics, Portuguese culture and society, and a broad range of current affairs. Outside of work, Bruno loves to travel and considers himself a theatre kid at heart. He is also passionate about music and, at gatherings, will happily take on the role of resident DJ, doing his best to play the greatest 90s R&B hits — with Mariah Carey being a particular favourite. Classic Portuguese literature is another guilty pleasure, with Eça de Queiroz holding a special place among his favourite authors.
