MONROVIA, Liberia, October 23, 2026: The Governance Commission (GC) has called for stronger accountability, transparency and citizen participation in public administration as Liberia observes October as Good Governance Month.
Speaking at a national policy dialogue in Monrovia, GC Executive Director Jallah C. Kesselly said good governance must go beyond public declarations and translate into concrete actions by government institutions and citizens.
Kesselly welcomed President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s proclamation declaring October Good Governance Month, describing it as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to strengthening governance.
“It is our wish and hope as an institution that all Liberians take this seriously, not only public officials, how we conduct ourselves in our homes and in our businesses and in our offices,” he said.
He emphasized that the dialogue was intended to strengthen collaboration among government institutions and promote adherence to good governance principles.
Delivering the welcome statement on behalf of the Board of Commissioners, Acting Vice Chairperson Sianeh Sackie Juah said the gathering provided an opportunity to assess Liberia’s governance challenges and identify practical reforms.
She stressed that accountability, transparency and citizen participation are essential to restoring public confidence, strengthening institutions and promoting inclusive national development.
“Without transparency, accountability cannot flourish. And without accountability, public service breaks, losing its fundamental purpose,” Juah said.
She reminded public officials that public office is a public trust, requiring integrity, responsible management of state resources and accountability for decisions.
Juah also called for greater openness in public spending, procurement, natural resource management and development projects to ensure government decisions serve the public interest.
On citizen participation, she urged authorities to create meaningful opportunities for citizens to influence policies and development decisions through consultations, community engagement and access to public information.
She emphasized that the success of the dialogue would depend on implementing practical recommendations rather than merely adopting resolutions.
The dialogue, held under the theme “Promoting Good Governance Through Accountability, Transparency and Citizen Participation for Inclusive Development,” brought together policymakers, governance practitioners, development partners and other stakeholders.
Juah called for measurable reforms and sustained institutional cooperation to strengthen governance and improve public service delivery across Liberia.
