Shillong, Oct 20: The Central Puja Committee (CPC) organised its flagship Drum Beat Competition in Shillong, bringing together drummers and Durga Puja committees to celebrate tradition, coordination and community spirit.
CPC president Naba Bhattacharjee said the competition was launched 30 years ago to strengthen ties among Puja committees through the shared rhythm of traditional drums.
“It was started to bring in coordination not only of the drums, but the coordination of hearts of different Puja committees together in sync with the beating of the drums,” he said.
Bhattacharjee traced the event’s origins to Ambika Kinnor, who came from North Bengal and encouraged drummers from the region and other areas to participate. The initiative gradually grew into a major fixture on Shillong’s Durga Puja calendar.
In recognition of his contribution, Kinnor was conferred the CPC’s highest honour, the Sarat Sanman Award, in 2010–11.
This year’s competition witnessed participation from drummers across Shillong, reaffirming the event’s role in bringing together Puja committees and preserving the cultural traditions associated with Durga Puja.
The event was sponsored by Ajay Agarwal, son of late Kumar Agarwal.
