Meta has an explanation for why the No Kings Coalition’s Instagram account went dark in the middle of its biggest day of the season. The culprit, according to Meta, was not the organizers’ posts but an AI tool the account was using behind the scenes.
Meta described an automated security system as the cause of the suspension, which hit during nationwide protests on October 17, 2026.
What happened on October 17
The account, @nokingscoalition, was suspended around 1:30 p.m. ET. That was during a day of action called “No Kings: Vote Early,” which included nearly 3,000 events across all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
Public visibility of the account was lost for approximately 90 minutes. Getting administrators back in took longer, with additional hours passing before admin access was fully restored.
Meta restored the account after acknowledging the action had been taken in error. The company then apologized, said such enforcement actions were unintentional, and confirmed the account was functioning normally again.
The Claude explanation
The first explanation pointed to an automated safety system triggered by high-frequency posting.
Organizers pushed back on that version. They reported that the account’s administrators had posted only a few times that day and were mostly using the account for livestreaming, not flooding feeds.
Meta later revised its account of events. The company said the problem stemmed from the coalition’s use of a Claude AI tool that was generating an unusually high volume of reading requests.
Those requests were reportedly tied to the tool scanning posts and hashtags. Meta’s security mechanisms read that activity as bot-like traffic and flagged it incorrectly.
Who the No Kings Coalition is
The No Kings Coalition is made up of around 200 organizations, including Indivisible and the ACLU. Its October 17 push focused on getting people to the polls early ahead of the midterms.
The coalition criticized the suspension as unjustified and called on Meta to be more transparent about its moderation policies. The group stressed that voter communication needs to flow without interruption during critical voting periods, which is exactly when the account went offline.
