Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied any involvement by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in a drone attack on a market in the disputed Abyei area that reportedly killed more than 200 people and injured dozens of others.
The attack struck Amiet Market on Monday, with reports indicating that 220 people were killed. The South Sudanese government condemned the incident and blamed the Sudanese military for the strike.
However, Sudan’s Foreign Ministry rejected the allegation in a statement posted on X, instead blaming what it described as “terrorist militias” for the attack.
“The Government of the Republic of Sudan expresses its profound regret over the loss of civilian lives in what was claimed to be a drone strike in the Nuam Market in the Abyei area,” the statement said.
The ministry expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
It also firmly rejected claims linking the Sudanese Armed Forces to the incident, stating that “there is no connection whatsoever between the Sudanese Armed Forces and this unfortunate incident”.
Sudan’s Foreign Ministry compared the attack to an incident on 13 December 2025, when a UN peacekeeping camp in Kadugli, South Kordofan, was attacked, killing several peacekeepers serving with the Bangladeshi Battalion of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
The statement said the latest incident “resembles the crimes that the terrorist militia continues to perpetrate”, referring to the previous attack.
It further accused the perpetrators of targeting humanitarian aid convoys during the December 2025 incident.
The ministry reiterated its condolences to the victims’ families, saying it “renews its solidarity with the victims’ families, and extends its wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured”.
The South Sudanese government has attributed responsibility for the Abyei market attack to the Sudanese Armed Forces, while Khartoum has denied the accusation.
Responsibility for the attack has not been independently established in the information available for this report. The conflicting accounts come amid heightened concern over civilian safety and security in the disputed Abyei area.
