Villagers, including women and children, resorted to a dharna opposing the move to set up a solar power plant by a private player in Suranur panchayat in Kovilankulam village in Virudhunagar district on Saturday.
The agitators said that the private entrepreneur was planning to set up the solar unit on a 41-acre plot. The initial works on the field had begun.
Opposing this, they claimed that it would affect their livelihood as they cannot take their milch animals for grazing.
The police, who were providing bandobust for the private entrepreneur, told the agitators, that based on a court directive, they had to give security to the men, working at the site, for installation of CCTV cameras.
On information, revenue authorities arrived and held talks with the villagers following which the men suspended their work.
Meanwhile, the villagers from Uduppu Kulam and Avarampatti too said that they would submit a petition to the Collector at the grievance meeting on Monday. Tiruchuli DSP Pradeep and others were present at the spot.
