The Kaduna State Institute of Vocational Training and Skills Development (KIVTSD) has pledged to strengthen vocational training and equip more youths with practical skills for self-reliance, while seeking increased government funding to support its operations.
The commitment was made during the inaugural meeting of the institute’s newly appointed board with the management at its Rigachikun campus in Kaduna State.
The board chairman, Mrs Esther Bago, said the board was ready to work closely with the management to advance the institute’s mandate. She also thanked Governor Uba Sani for the appointment.
“We are ready as a new board to work closely with the management in taking the institute to the desired height,” she said.
The Provost, Alhaji Husaini Haruna Muhammed, disclosed that the institute graduated 4,050 learners in August, with each receiving a ₦200,000 start-up grant.
He appealed for increased budgetary provision to enable the institute to meet its operational needs, citing the large number of learners and contract staff.
The institute operates three campuses serving the state’s three senatorial zones.
Deputy Provosts of the Samarun Kataf and Soba campuses, Mrs Phoebe Yayi Sukai and Dr Ahmed Usman, commended the governor for appointing members to the board. They, however, noted that some projects across the three campuses were yet to be completed and handed over by contractors.
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) representative, Hon. Dauda Madaki, said the institute could help create jobs, tackle unemployment and improve security in Kaduna State.
The meeting ended with a tour of the institute’s workshops and facilities.
