Indian Parliament Speaker Om Birla has said any fresh motion seeking the impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar will be examined in accordance with parliamentary rules and procedures.
"If any fresh notice comes, we will see and examine it accordingly under rules and procedures," Birla told a press conference in New Delhi today (22 October), responding to a question about a possible new impeachment motion against the CEC.
Opposition parties have twice attempted to remove Kumar. Notices submitted during the first attempt were rejected by both houses of Parliament, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, while notices from the second attempt remain pending in the Rajya Sabha.
Kumar has faced renewed street protests over allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Demonstrations seeking his resignation have taken place in different parts of India over the past fortnight.
Opposition protests intensified after The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally objected at least 14 times over the past 10 months to decisions and orders related to the SIR, alleging they were issued without their knowledge or recommendation.
Under India's Constitution and the law governing the appointment of the CEC and Election Commissioners, the CEC can be removed by Parliament through a process similar to the impeachment of a sitting Supreme Court judge
