A Class XI student of a Kidderpore school died on Friday evening after falling from the terrace of a 10th-floor residential building on Matheswartala Road, under Pragati Maidan police station.
Police said Farhan Alam was on the terrace with a friend when the incident occurred. A preliminary investigation suggested that Alam may have slipped while standing on the parapet, possibly after a plywood sheet placed over a drainpipe gave way.
“It seems like the student was standing on a false ceiling-like structure above the terrace parapet when he lost his balance and fell to the ground. The exact circumstances leading to the fall, however, are yet to be established,” a Police officer said.
After the incident, Alam’s friend reportedly rushed downstairs to inform the family. The teenager was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The police are trying to reconstruct the sequence of events by examining CCTV footage from cameras installed on the terrace. Investigators have yet to establish whether the plywood sheet broke or another factor led to the fall.
Alam is survived by his parents and a sister. The police said no formal complaint been lodged till Saturday evening.
