LG Electronics is teaming up with GS E&C and US cooling specialist Green Revolution Cooling to develop standardized immersion-cooling systems for artificial intelligence data centers, expanding its push into next-generation cooling technologies.
The three companies signed a memorandum of understanding Tuesday at GS E&C's headquarters in Seoul to develop integrated cooling solutions and test their suitability for commercial data centers.
The signing ceremony was attended by LG Electronics Executive Vice President Oh Se-gi, head of its ES Research Lab; GS E&C Executive Vice President Cho Sung-han, head of its Future Technology Institute; and GRC Korea branch director Choi Dong-hoon.
Immersion cooling involves submerging heat-generating components, such as graphics or central processing units, in a nonconductive liquid to dissipate heat. The technology is gaining attention as AI data centers require increasingly powerful and energy-efficient cooling systems.
Unlike conventional cooling methods, immersion cooling requires close coordination between cooling equipment and data center infrastructure, including building structures, piping, electrical systems and maintenance facilities.
Under the agreement, LG Electronics will provide cooling technologies and operational data to develop systems based on standardized designs.
GS E&C will handle architectural design and operate a test bed to evaluate equipment placement, structural loads, piping and power connections. GRC will supply immersion tanks and control systems, drawing on installation and maintenance data to improve performance.
The partnership will add immersion cooling to LG's existing air- and liquid-cooling portfolio, strengthening its ability to offer integrated solutions for AI data centers.
LG's current lineup includes high-efficiency chillers and fan wall units for air cooling, as well as coolant distribution units and cold plates for liquid cooling.
"We will continue developing high-performance, energy-efficient cooling solutions to gain an early lead in the rapidly growing AI data center cooling market," Oh said.
